Networking & Business Development - NM Rainforest Seminar

STC.UNM and the Innovation Academy are hosting their summer 2019 University Center Seminar series. The New Mexico Rainforest University Center provides entrepreneurial training and technical assistance at the University of New Mexico main and branch‐campus center sites. The seminars are free and open to the UNM community and the public via in‐person or web access, but registration is required. A certificate program in entrepreneurial capabilities is available to UNM students and community members thru UNM’s Innovation Academy. If interested in the certificate program as part of the seminar series, please contact Cecilia Pacheco at cpacheco@stc.unm.edu.

Speaker Bios:

Stacy Sacco

Mr. Sacco teaches entrepreneurial studies at the UNM Anderson School of Management for the past eighteen years, serves as the Director of the UNM Small Business Institute and the faculty advisor for the UNM student entrepreneur clubs. The Small Business Institute connects small businesses and other community organizations to MBA student teams to perform consulting work and marketing research. 

Stacy has over 30 years' experience in marketing management with Avco Financial Services, Hyundai Finance, Transamerica Insurance, and locally, the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce, Kirtland Federal Credit Union and WESST Enterprise Center. Outside of his work at UNM, Stacy publishes a monthly email to 4,500+ subscribers including hundreds of marketing and tech jobs, and the Albuquerque Entrepreneurial Ecosystem list, and he hosts the annual NM MARCOM Mixer that attracts 350-500 members of the top 20 marketing and tech-industry professional associations statewide.

John Chavez, New Mexico Angels

Mr. Chavez has served as the President of the New Mexico Angels since 2008 and has been an active angel investor since 2003. Mr. Chavez is also the Managing Director of Phase One Ventures, a start-up fund out of Santa Fe, NM, and Managing Director of New Mexico Start-Up Factory I and II. Outside of the Angels, he is the President of Tafoya and Brainerd Partners LLC, a nationwide business development-consulting firm. Prior to his work in consulting, Mr. Chavez was appointed Cabinet Secretary of the Taxation and Revenue Department by New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson. During his six-year tenure as tax secretary he also served as the President of the Federation of Taxation Administrators for one year.

Gavin works as a pitch coach for the NM Rainforest Community and has taught multiple courses at UNM in the Communication and Journalism Department, Anderson School of Management, Honors College and Freshmen Learning Community. He has also acted as a communication consultant for the City of Albuquerque, US Forest Service and NM Employment Services. 

One of Gavin’s biggest passions is helping entrepreneurs effectively articulate their business ideas to investors, venture capitalists or any other interested party. In 1992, she joined Sandia National Laboratories, where she is currently on a special leave of absence as a Principal Member of the Technical Staffand head of Sandia’s technical efforts in the Renewable Energy Program to assist Native American tribes with renewable energy development. Prior to this, she also worked at Lawrence Livermore Laboratories and at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Ms. Begay is a former Executive Director of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES), former chair of the AISES Board of Directors, and the recipient of the AISES Lifetime Achievement Award.

Join us for an informational Lunch and Learn event focused on an introduction to patents, trademarks and copyrights with Special Guest Speaker Janeen Vilven-Dogget from Peacock Law. 

Janeen Vilven-Doggett, Ph.D., is a partner of Peacock Law P.C. specializing in patent prosecution in biotechnology, computer science, chemical and pharmaceutical sciences, genetics, medical devices, nanotechnology, and optics, and a member of the litigation team. She also handles patent, trademark and intellectual property, FDA counseling regarding medical devices, pharmaceutical applications, and product labeling requirements. She earned a J.D. cum laude from the University of New Mexico, a bachelor’s degree in biology from Baylor University, and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. She is licensed to practice in New Mexico, the United States District Court of the District of New Mexico, and the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, and is a Registered Patent Attorney. NMBio’s Knowledge Fair & Expo

Join us on October 29 at CNM’s Training Center in Albuquerque for NMBio’s second annual Knowledge Fair & Expo. The event will be held from 8 am to 4:30 pm.


The Expo will attract entrepreneurs, research scientists, business executives, venture capitalists, angel investors, thought leaders, tech transfer specialists, economic development professionals, journalists, and academic leaders.

Attendees from Las Cruces to Los Alamos will have the opportunity to meet leaders of established and startup bioscience companies, suppliers, service providers, and innovators! Exhibitors and attendees alike will be able to make strategic connections, establish new collaborations, socialize with industry colleagues, and discover companies working on cutting edge research and bringing new products to market.

The speakers that we’re recruiting will explore the current economic and political climate for the state bioscience sector, discuss how we can develop and retain a talent pipeline that will meet the future needs of our growing and maturing life science companies, and instruct our startups and small businesses on how they can access traditional as well as new sources of capital.

Tickets for NMBio and NM Technology Council members are $45; the fee for non-members is $65.

The cost to exhibit for members is $300; the fee for non-members is $500. Exhibitors will receive three passes to the event.

Sponsorships range from $1,000 to $5,000.

Session Two – Building a Brand (8/21/18): Building a Brand provides an introduction to marketing plans, advertising promotional mixes, and lays a foundation and method for building your brand, with a special focus on crafting an effective mission statement.

Session Three – Marketing in Action (8/28/18): Marketing in Action focuses on developing an “elevator speech” for your business and implementing both web marketing and social media marketing strategies.

Meet Up @ FatPipe ABQ: Intro to Wordpress

This workshop is for beginners who want to learn about WordPress, a very popular content management system, used for websites and blogs. By the end of the workshop you will know how to set up, build, and manage a WordPress website. Although we will go over how to install WordPress, in the interest of time, we will use temporary installations already set up for everyone to use. You are welcome to use your own WordPress installation if you already have that set up.

This class will be taught over two weeks on Mon & Wed evenings:

CLASS FEE: $100 Class Fee covers ALL 4 classes on the following dates:

• Mon, July 30th from 5:30-7:30pm

• Wed, August 1st from 5:30-7:30pm

• Mon, August 6th from 5:30-7:30pm

• Wed, August 8th from 5:30-7:30pm

In this beginner's workshop we'll cover:

• installing WordPress

• the administration and management of your WP site

• managing comments, spam, security, widgets, and menus

• finding and installing themes and plugins

• bulk editing of pages/posts

• customization of themes.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Bring your laptop and charger (Wifi & power strips will be provided)

PREREQUISITES:

You do not need any prior experience with WordPress to attend. A basic understanding of HTML/CSS is helpful, but it is not necessary!

What to bring:

Bring a laptop, charger, and headphones with you.

 

NOTE:

If we have less than 5 people signed up for this class up to a week before the starting date, it may be postponed for a later date.
